Dear people,
My adventure has started! Last week I arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to start my one year VSO placement as a Tropical Doctor.
At home it is over 30 degrees, but here I need a sweater and it rains every day. So much for africa! It leaves the streets full of yellow brown mud, and gives hundreds of shoe cleaners a living.
Ethiopia is not just a hungry desert. It is sometimes called the watertower of africa because of the large rainy highlands from which many large rivers flow to large parts of east africa. It has 2 rainy seasons. We are in the middle of the large rains.
Addis feels like an mellow version of an ordinary african city. Dirty traffic, but no need to say a prayer before crossing the road. Lots of people on the road, but not so much sellers and hassle as you might expect. The coffee is fantastic and is served at war strength.
This week I spent my time gradually finding out where I have arrived. There are amharic lessons (Amasigenalu!) cultural introductions (markets, minibusses and heaps of fantastic food) and paperwork. Still I know little about the place I will be going to. It is at 2500 metres altitude. The name Robe means “rain” in a local language. The best preparation I could think of was to buy rubber boots.
Monday I will hopefully meet some of my future colleagues, and take the car ride to Bale Robe Hospital. It will take 1,5 days and then I finally get to see the place I will be living for next year!
I am very exited and curious and a bit nervous as well...

Je verslag van Ethiopië, de eerste dagen doet me denken aan de periodes dat ik er zelf was.
Het bijzondere van Addis vond ik dat het er overal naar eucalyptus en naar verbrandend eucalyptushout rook. En net zoals jou viel het me op hoe je op zoveel plaatsen lekker kon eten. Goede reis en veel plezier daar.
